Portugal Wine Trophy: Trás-os-Montes Edition
Since 2014, the Portugal Wine Trophy has been one of Portugal’s most important international wine competitions. Organised by DWM – Deutsche Wein Marketing GmbH, it brings together wine experts from all over the world year after year to taste and evaluate exclusive wines professionally and independently. With the Trás-os-Montes Edition 2026, the spotlight turns to a region that stands for authenticity, terroir and strong regional identity.
Trás-os-Montes: Portugal’s Wine Region of Contrasts
Located in the northeast of Portugal, Trás-os-Montes reveals itself as a wine region shaped by mountains and striking valleys. Stretching from Montalegre to the Planalto Mirandês, the region is defined by an extraordinary diversity of landscapes, microclimates and soils. It is precisely the interplay of granite and schist soils, altitude and regional contrasts that gives the wines of Trás-os-Montes their distinctive character.
The wine region is divided into the three sub-regions of Chaves, Valpaços and Planalto Mirandês. While Chaves is characterised by granite soils, higher rainfall and more humid conditions, Valpaços, in the heart of the Terra Quente, stands for warmer summers, lower humidity and a long wine-growing tradition. In Planalto Mirandês, the Douro River, major temperature differences and windy, dry conditions all influence viticulture, adding even more definition to the region’s identity.
Origin, History and Wine Style
Trás-os-Montes is not only a region of great oenological potential, but also one with deep historical roots. The CVRTM refers to a centuries-old wine tradition and to numerous rock-carved wine presses of Roman and pre-Roman origin, which vividly testify to the long history of winemaking in this region.
In stylistic terms, Trás-os-Montes also has a clear profile: according to the CVRTM, the white wines are aromatically balanced, fruit-driven and slightly floral, with fresh but not excessive acidity. The red wines show intense colour, ripe fruit, structure and balance — powerful, yet harmonious. It is precisely this combination of expression, freshness and structure that makes Trás-os-Montes such a compelling host region for an international wine competition.
In Collaboration with the Comissão Vitivinícola Regional de Trás-os-Montes
Special thanks go to the Comissão Vitivinícola Regional de Trás-os-Montes, with whose fantastic support we are organising the Portugal Wine Trophy 2026. The CVRTM is responsible for certifying wines with Denominação de Origem Trás-os-Montes and Indicação Geográfica Transmontano, promoting their visibility and marketing, and actively supporting the quality development of regional viticulture. This collaboration underlines the close connection between the Portugal Wine Trophy and the region’s wine heritage.
International Tasting at the Highest Level
The submitted wines are tasted and evaluated in a special setting by a professional and independent jury. For us as organisers, it is a great honour to host the Portugal Wine Trophy 2026 in Trás-os-Montes and, together with the Comissão Vitivinícola Regional de Trás-os-Montes, to present a region that stands for diversity, quality and origin at the highest level. The Trás-os-Montes Edition 2026 combines international prestige with regional identity — creating the ideal stage for outstanding wines.
