Portugal Wine Trophy 2021:
After having to cancel the 2020 edition, the Portuguese contest is back with the support of the participants
The largest wine competition in the country, the Portugal Wine Trophy, took place from November 26 to 28 at the Hotel das Termas da Curia (Anadia). During these days, the nearly 60 members of the international jury were able to taste more than1,500 still, sparkling and liqueur wines from all over the world. As on other occasions, the competition enjoyed the support of important patronages and memberships such as the OIV (International Organisation of Vine and Wine), UIOE (International Union of Oenologists) and Vinofed (World Federation of Major International Wine and Spirits Competitions). Indeed, this fact implies certain quality standards, such as the 30% rule that restricts the number of award-winning wines to avoid devaluation of the medal; therefore, 15 wines have obtained the Grand Gold medal, 336 have obtained Gold and 92 have obtained Silver.
Participants from the Bairrada wine region were this year’s protagonists, as the municipality of AnadÃa took the opportunity of this international competition to launch a promotional program for its regional products: “An investment by the Municipality of Anadia to encourage and promote internationally the wines of Bairrada, as well as wine tourism and other local products of the region”, commented the communications manager of Anadia, who was present at the tasting.
Those attending the competition, ranging from winemakers to renowned marketers, with their different national and international perspectives, agreed that the Portugal Wine Trophy has certainly not lost its prestige due to the problems of the pandemic, but continues to gain the confidence of all entrants; Portuguese producers recognize the added value that the medal brings, and international applicants see the opportunity to access the domestic market thanks to this important wine competition.
